Sri Ramaswamy Memorial was started under section 3 of University grant commission act 1956,.and in the year of 1984, it was founded as self-financing institute known as vellor institute of technology. 

Sri Ramaswamy Memorial has campuses in Chennai, AP Amravati, Haryana and Sikkim 

Main campus of Vellore Institute of Technology has area of 372 acre. It is divided by railway line. It’s another campus is in Chennai whose area is of 185 acres situated at Vandalur-Kelambakkam road.
